PLUMCREEK TOWNSHIP, Pa. -- A group of strangers jumped into an icy creek in Armstrong County to save a little girl trapped in a car.

The accident happened along Sunkin Valley Road in Plumcreek Township.

Police said 4-year-old Carmen Bills was riding in a car with her father, Chris Bills, when he hit an icy patch on the road and rolled his car into a creek.

Five nearby construction workers used a harness to haul the vehicle out of the water.

Michael Pearson, police chief and mayor of Elderton, arrived at the scene before emergency crews and gave the girl CPR.

“I've never been happier to hear a noise come from a child where it sounded like a cry,” said Pearson. “ was very happy at that point.”

Carmen was taken by medical helicopter to Children's Hospital, where she is in critical condition.

There is no word on the extent of Chris Bills’ injuries.
